A rare lithographed biscuit tin by Bekkers & Zoon of Dordrecht, Holland, dating from the early 20th century. Elegant in form, the tall cylindrical body rises from a flared foot to a domed lid, richly decorated with gilt scrollwork against a deep blue ground. Oval reserves on either side reproduce celebrated scenes after Johannes Vermeer, including _The Milkmaid_ and another of the artist's intimate domestic interiors, both emblematic of the Dutch Golden Age. The softly muted colours and finely printed decoration give the piece a refined and distinctly nostalgic character.
The tin displays a beautifully aged surface with gentle wear and rubbing throughout. The gilt-toned interior shows an attractive timeworn patina with scattered spotting consistent with age. The lid can be somewhat temperamental and is best handled with care.
At the turn of the 20th century, Dutch biscuit manufacturers often decorated their tins with reproductions of famous works of art, transforming everyday packaging into decorative household objects. Vermeer's quiet domestic interiors, widely admired by this period, were especially popular for their associations with refinement, prosperity, and the idealised Dutch home.
Today, it brings a touch of old-world charm to a kitchen shelf, where its rich colours, gilt decoration, and Vermeer scenes add warmth, character, and a sense of collected history.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
