This large French bistro mirror, circa 1920, has a tall rectangular profile framed in a mitred, molded wooden surround finished in a muted walnut-brown with softly brushed grain. The painted surface shows gentle rubbing and age-softened edges, giving the frame an easy, timeworn warmth. The original mirror plate displays scattered foxing and desilvering, most pronounced at the perimeter and upper edge, adding a nostalgic, lived-in character while still offering clear, usable reflection across the field. Solid in structure and evocative in mood, it brings the quiet romance of old salons into any interior.
French bistros and brasseries of the Belle Époque and interwar years relied on generous mirrors to brighten rooms and extend sightlines, and this example echoes that tradition with its simple molding, painted finish, and authentic aged plate.
Ideal leaned in an entry, hung horizontaly in a dining room or loft living space, it opens a room and softens light with its gently speckled reflection. Pair it with raw oak, leather club chairs, or clean-lined contemporary pieces to bridge rustic and modern moods. In a boutique or bar area, it brings a touch of nostalgic charm while adding scale and depth.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
