This tall French chest of drawers, dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, comes from the Château de La Verdière in the Var, Provence. Its simple, straight-lined form features four full-width drawers, a slightly projecting top and delicate carved details at the upper front corners. The painted finish is particularly beautiful, with layers of silvery gray, chalky white and muted green creating a cloudy, almost misty effect. The darker top provides a pleasing contrast, while extensive rubbing, age-related cracks and scattered paint losses revealing warmer underlying colors give the surface its rich, timeworn texture. The wooden drawer knobs are replacements, one slightly larger than the others. There are no locks, and the drawers require a gentle hand. Small losses at the corners of the top and some damage to one rear corner are further signs of age, in keeping with its beautifully weathered character.
The simple, straight-lined form allows the beautiful patina to take center stage. Its soft, shifting grays and cloudy finish give the commode a painterly quality, while four generous drawers offer plenty of practical storage. It would sit beautifully in a bedroom or living room, with an antique mirror or painting resting on top. Its rustic character also makes it an interesting counterpoint to more refined furniture and contemporary pieces.
