A tall, slender French decorative panel, oil on silk laid down on canvas, signed and dated 1902. The vertical composition shows two white wading birds among papyrus and lush reeds, poised above a tranquil lily pond studded with pink waterlilies and broad green pads against a soft celadon ground. The palette is calm and naturalistic, with delicate feather work and crisp botanical detail guiding the eye upward. The motif of herons among lilies in marsh or lagoon settings was popular in decorative arts at the turn of the 20th century, with many reinterpretations and reproductions. This example is likely based on a design by Émilie Vouga (Swiss, 1840–1909), whose naturalistic views of flora, fauna, and birds were widely circulated in chromolithographs at that time.

The tall, narrow format draws on the influence of Asian scroll paintings, which enjoyed great popularity in Europe in the late 19th century.
