A late 19th-century French seltzer siphon of tabletop scale, its classic double-gourd body of hand-blown clear glass enclosed in a sheath of soft iron hexagonal mesh. Topped with a pewter dispensing head with curved spout and thumb lever, the collar bears a stamped mark. The cool silvered pewter plays against the darkened wire cage and the luminous clarity of the glass. Designed for eau de seltz in the Belle Époque and early 20th century, such siphons were standard in bistro and bar service, delivering carbonated water at table. The wire cladding, often called fil de fer, safeguarded the pressurized vessel while improving grip, and the double-gourd silhouette balanced capacity with stability. This sculptural form reads beautifully on a bar cart or drinks cabinet, where its industrial gloss and gentle patina add character to cut crystal and cocktail tools. It also suits a kitchen shelf, lending a note of authentic bistro style alongside stoneware crocks and apothecary jars. In a contemporary loft or a French country setting, it serves as a quietly graphic accent, a conversation piece that anchors a vignette with timeworn charm.
