This expressive French still life, dated 1979 and signed what appears to read “Aeris,” features a striking arrangement of gladiolus rising from a simple blue jug. Painted in oil on canvas with confident, energetic brushwork, the composition is built around the tall vertical sweep of the flowers, their vivid reds and corals set against a dark interior ground and a curtain of deep rose tones. The elongated format gives the piece a strong decorative presence, naturally drawing the eye upward through the stems and blossoms.
Gladiolus, prized for their brilliant color and dramatic height, have long symbolized strength and integrity, qualities echoed in the painting’s bold, gestural handling.
The surface shows lively texture where brushstrokes build the petals and leaves in layered passages of paint. Recently restored, the colors appear fresh and luminous. The painting is presented unframed, emphasizing the immediacy of the artist’s hand and the richness of the palette.
The elongated composition makes this piece especially effective where height is needed. Hung on a narrow wall, beside a doorway, or punctuating a corner, the rising gladiolus and vigorous brushwork create a lively vertical rhythm that immediately draws the eye.
