This charming figural stoneware coffee jar by contemporary French ceramicist Julie Desert Armanville takes the form of a moustached coffee merchant holding a sack of coffee beans. Dressed in blue overalls inscribed coffee, the figure is rendered with the expressive features, bold proportions, and gentle humour that characterise the artist's work. The upper body lifts away as a lid, revealing a storage compartment within. Variations in glaze, texture, and firing reflect the handmade nature of the work and contribute to its unique personality.
Hand-modelled and richly textured, the piece exemplifies Desert Armanville's distinctive approach to studio pottery, where sculpture and function are seamlessly combined. Trained in the Vallauris atelier of renowned ceramicist Roger Capron between 1972 and 1982, Julie Desert Armanville has developed a highly individual style inspired by the traditions and everyday characters of southern France. Her distinctive creations blur the boundary between sculpture and domestic object, bringing warmth, humour, and craftsmanship to everyday life.
Ideal for storing coffee beans, tea bags, or sugar cubes, this characterful jar adds a touch of whimsy and artistry to the kitchen while keeping everyday essentials close at hand.
