The moment you ordered, a waiter set a small porcelain saucer before you — its price printed right on the face in crisp black type. As the afternoon wore on, the saucers stacked up into a neat ceramic tally. When it came time to settle, the numbers told the whole story.

This set of three vintage French bistro saucers — *coupelles à monnaie*, or *ramasse-monnaie* — comes from Patricia and Walter Wells's collection and captures that system in miniature. Each is a small, shallow disc of white porcelain, lightly glazed, with a raised ring at the centre that once cradled a coffee cup. The prices are printed in crisp black type: 2f50, 3f, and 4f — a range that covered everything from a simple *café* to a glass of wine or an apéritif. What makes the trio particularly appealing is the variation in rim decoration: one carries a terracotta-orange band, another a deep burgundy, the third a fresh sage green, each applied in short dashes around the edge. Made by different manufacturers — likely Limoges or Pillivuyt — they were customised to each establishment's needs, which accounts for the pleasing differences in colour and type style across the three.

Grouped on a kitchen shelf, arranged on a windowsill, or used as ring dishes or salt cellars, they bring a graphic, unpretentious charm to any interior — a direct line back to the zinc counters and marble tables of the French café.
