A superb yellow-glazed terracotta pot à bouillon from south west France. Dating from the late nineteenth century, it has the number 2 written into the clay, indicative of its size.
This little pot has a big history!
It is from the Cévennes region in south-central France. It was used by silk makers who worked in teams to produce silk from silkworms in a building known as a magnanerie. Workers were served bouillon (a broth) for their lunch - quite a regime! It would have originally had a lid.
A rare small-scale pot that will make a lovely addition to a collection of antique French pottery.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
