“Dieulefit means ‘God made it’,” Patricia always says of the Drôme village where she found this small trompe-l’œil ceramic dish. “I love it! I bought it from a potter there.”
Pottery has been made in Dieulefit for some two thousand years. Traces of first-century Gallo-Roman pottery have been found locally, and successive generations of potters have continued to work with the area’s clay.
Handmade and signed, the oval dish is glazed in warm honey yellow, with a scalloped, beaded rim. Eight ceramic calissons are arranged inside, their white tops imitating the icing on the traditional confection from Aix-en-Provence.
The piece was displayed in the “Marseille cabinet,” the antique vitrine in the living room at Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter’s farmhouse in Vaison-la-Romaine.
