A charming petite oil on panel by Zacharie Noterman (1824–1890), this intimate genre scene depicts two dogs gathered at a tavern table, their full attention fixed on a tempting plate of waffles beside a pitcher, an apple, and a knife set on crisp white linen. The warm palette of umber, cream, and chestnut enhances the candlelit atmosphere, while the dogs’ expressions are rendered with remarkable sensitivity and wit. The shaggy terrier’s alert posture contrasts beautifully with the darker companion’s sideways, almost conspiratorial glance, the expression of the left dog in particular is irresistibly lifelike and full of character. Signed at lower left, the work is presented in a simple gilt frame with timeworn edges and minor losses; the painted surface remains in good condition with light, age-appropriate wear. These two dogs are thought to recur in Noterman’s oeuvre and may well have been his own, appearing in related compositions such as Little Meal at the Tavern and The Master of Animals.
Zacharie Noterman was a Belgian painter and printmaker renowned for his humorous and affectionate depictions of animals, especially dogs and monkeys portrayed with human-like emotion and intent. Trained in Antwerp under his elder brother Emmanuel Noterman, he developed a distinctive style that combined precise observation with loose, animated brushwork. Active in Belgium and Paris throughout the mid- to late 19th century, he exhibited widely, and his works entered notable public collections. His enduring appeal lies in his ability to convey personality and narrative through subtle gesture, expression, and tone.
This panel invites close viewing and brings warmth and gentle humor to its surroundings. It is especially evocative in a dog lover’s interior, hung near a dog’s resting corner or basket, it creates a playful and affectionate dialogue between art and everyday life. It also works beautifully within a gallery wall of canine portraits, where its narrative charm and expressive faces stand out. In a kitchen, breakfast nook, or bar area, it adds conviviality when paired with copper, stoneware, and linen. Whether displayed on a shelf, above a low console, or nestled among books in a study, this painting offers a small but priceless moment of character, companionship, and quiet wit.
