A set of two of French barbotine majolica dessert plates, each glazed in an usual deep teal green. One features a single pear, the other a pair of pears on leafy sprays, both framed within decorative roundels. The rims differ, one in tactile basket-weave, the other with scrolling foliage and berries, the transparent glaze pooling beautifully in the recesses.
Stamped to the reverse and in good condition with light surface wear and subtle glaze variations from firing. These plates reflect the brief but remarkable legacy of the Faïencerie de Rubelles, active for only about two decades in the mid-19th century. The factory pioneered the émaïl ombrant (shadow glaze) process that produced rich, subtly shaded glazes and unusual color effects, notably deep greens, blues, ochres and browns.
With its sharp modeling, vibrant colors and fine relief work, Rubelles faïence is highly collected today and especially suitable for decorative use: these dessert plates would bring luminous texture and historic interest to a dresser, wall display or serving table.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
