Unframed Oval Portrait of a Young Country Woman, in the Taste of Greuze, Late 19th or Early 20th Century - 21¾" x 18"

This evocative late 19th- or early 20th-century oil on canvas depicts a young woman in rustic dress, her head tilted upward and lips gently parted, as though captivated by something beyond the viewer’s sight. Her upward gaze gives the portrait a distinctly spiritual, almost mystical quality. Pale skin, a softly gathered white bonnet and cream-and-pink scarf emerge against the deep brown ground with an almost luminous effect, while the oval format concentrates attention on her expression and gives the image an intimate, icon-like presence. The painting has been cleaned and presents unframed, in good overall condition.

The composition seems to be copied form an 18th-century portrait titled Tête de jeune paysanne, preserved at the Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain de Saint-Étienne. Although the museum attributes that painting to an anonymous artist, its expressive treatment strongly recalls the female heads for which Greuze (1725–1805) became celebrated, with their uplifted gazes, parted lips and heightened emotional presence. Such compositions were widely admired and copied, and this later version reflects the enduring appeal of the expressive female portraits associated with Greuze.

The painting has a strong decorative presence, with the dark ground and luminous face standing out beautifully against plaster, stone or a richly colored wall. A rich gilt frame could further enhance its presence and period character. It would work especially well as part of a portrait gallery wall, where the oval format and upward gaze would introduce variety among more traditional compositions, while in a contemporary interior it could create an intriguing contrast.
