Very Large 18th-Century French Aubusson Wool and Silk Tapestry, Le Moulin de Charenton

A very large 18th-century French Aubusson tapestry in wool and silk, depicting Le Moulin de Charenton, a pastoral composition traditionally associated with a cartoon by Jean-Baptiste Huet (1745–1811), one of the leading French decorative painters and textile designers of the late 18th century, was celebrated for pastoral landscapes, animals, and rural scenes. A detailed watermill anchors the wooded landscape to the left, while cattle, sheep, and elegantly dressed pastoral figures animate the foreground beneath a canopy of dense foliage. The scene is enclosed by a narrow floral border in warm reds, ochres, greens, and blue. The tapestry survives in very good condition for its age, with only a few discreet restorations to the border. It has been professionally backed with linen and fitted with metal rings for hanging.

The composition is well documented in Aubusson weaving: _Le Moulin de Charenton_ was a successful 18th-century design, generally associated with Jean-Baptiste Huet, although it has also been linked to Jacques-Nicolas Julliard. Aubusson, granted the collective title of Manufacture Royale in 1665, became celebrated for the quality and sophistication of its large-scale verdure and pastoral tapestries.
