This very large framed market scene appears to be an early- to mid-20th-century interpretation of a composition by the English Victorian painter Henry Charles Bryant (1836–1915). The lively scene depicts a bustling covered market, crowded with shoppers, vendors and children in period dress, surrounded by baskets of vegetables, poultry, rabbits and other market goods. Rich greens, warm browns and burgundy tones are enlivened by touches of red, blue and cream, with numerous small details bringing the composition to life.

The unsigned work is executed on a textured, canvas-like support, with a thick, slightly waxy surface and areas of raised texture resembling brushwork.
