This magnificent "pique serge" floor candlestick hails from a church in Italy in the nineteenth century. The highly decorated front features a carved wood painted with a beige white color and accented with gilt paint and floral and acanthus leaf foliage motifs throughout.
The scalloped top where the candle is held is made of painted tole. Meant to stand against a wall, only the front and sides which show are finished and decorated. This was a common practice at the time to be able to afford expensive decorative pieces. This would be a fabulous piece to illuminate a front hall or living space with European charm.
