This very large fiber-cement garden basin dates from the mid-20th century and was designed by Swiss designer Willy Guhl for Eternit. Its broad, shallow saucer-shaped bowl rests on a separate flared pedestal, creating a monumental yet remarkably simple silhouette characteristic of Guhl’s sculptural approach to outdoor design. The two-part construction allows the bowl to be positioned and adjusted on its base, while a drainage hole makes it fully functional as a planter in all weather conditions. The surface has weathered beautifully outdoors, developing mottled gray, beige and green tones, with areas of moss, staining and natural discoloration that give the piece considerable depth and character.
The restrained form reflects the modernist approach to garden design pioneered by Guhl, who exploited fiber cement for its relative lightness, durability and ability to withstand outdoor conditions while being molded into bold, sculptural forms.  Here, the broad basin and raised pedestal give the planter a particularly architectural presence. Its beautifully weathered surface would work especially well with simple greenery that lets the sculptural profile remain the focus.
As with many fiber-cement pieces of this period, the material may contain asbestos; we therefore recommend outdoor use and advise against sanding, drilling or otherwise altering the surface.
