Very Large Oil on Canvas of Harbor Scene w/ Merchant Ships - 56¾" x 67¾"

A large oil on canvas depicting the Port of La Rochelle, signed Martel and inscribed “7.33,” (possibly July 1933). The wide, animated composition presents a lively harbor scene with three-masted ships flying red pennants, their sails full as they enter the port. At left, a stone tower evokes the medieval defences of La Rochelle, while the foreground is populated with quay-side figures, barrels, and bales, and a small working boat at the water’s edge. The palette blends sea greens, ochres, and warm earth tones beneath a pale, lightly clouded sky.

Executed in a deliberately historicizing style, the scene draws on earlier maritime imagery, with ships and costumes recalling the 17th or 18th century rather than the period of execution. This nostalgic approach, combined with the softened palette and slightly naïve handling, gives the work a decorative, narrative quality. Now presented in a simple later surround and removed from its original stretcher, the canvas shows perimeter nail marks and a vertical crease to the right from past folding, along with scattered abrasions, minor losses, and stable craquelure. These surface characteristics contribute to a convincingly timeworn appearance, reinforcing the painting’s historic character and suggesting a possible intentional aging of the surface in keeping with its subject.
