This large stoneware salting jar dates from the mid twentieth century and was likely produced for a butcher or charcuterie. It is defined by its impressive 120 litre capacity and a clean, well proportioned form. The smooth ivory glaze is uniform and practical, chosen for its hygienic qualities and ease of cleaning, while the four robust loop handles provide secure handling at scale. A stamped capacity mark confirms its utilitarian purpose, and the overall condition remains very good, with only minimal signs of use that speak to careful handling. It retains its original lid, which completes the silhouette and adds a strong sculptural presence while underscoring its utilitarian origins.
Today, this jar offers strong decorative potential through its scale and understated presence. Originally intended for curing meats, it has not been fitted with a drainage hole, but it can still function beautifully as a planter with appropriate lining. Placed poolside, on a terrace, or at an entryway, it works particularly well planted with a citrus tree, olive, or topiary. Its calm, architectural silhouette pairs naturally with similar vessels, creating a striking rhythm when grouped together.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
