A petite pair of Sicilian majolica wall brackets. Hand modeled and hand painted, the scalloped shelves are fronted by serene female faces framed with vine leaves, grapes, and fruit. The palette is vivid cobalt, verdant green, saffron, aubergine, and ivory, with glossy glaze pooling in the relief to create depth and shadow. Nicely proportioned and tactile, the pair presents in very good vintage condition with small glaze nicks, a few tiny chips to the high points, light edge wear, and gentle age crazing that suits their character.
Rooted in the long majolica tradition of Sicily, particularly the workshops of Caltagirone, these consoles echo the exuberant Baroque vocabulary long favored on the island. Garlands of harvest fruit and classical faces signaled abundance and protection, Motifs revived by mid century artisans who continued and popularized the island’s long standing ceramic tradition. Small wall brackets like these were typically hung in pairs to hold a candle, or small vase, or simply to enliven a corridor with color and relief.
Pierced at the back for wall mounting, they can be placed on either side of a bed in a summer house, bringing sun, warmth, and Mediterranean vibrancy to the room. Also perfect for a kitchen, garden room, or layered gallery wall, they add a playful, bohemian note while offering a small perch for a bud vase or votive.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
