This adjustable wall sconce has hung beside the bed in *Le Marin*, one of the guestrooms at Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter's farmhouse and cooking school near Vaison-la-Romaine.
The arm is brass with a warm gold patina, mounted on a swing mechanism from a polished circular wall plate. It extends and adjusts to direct light exactly where it is needed, and a pull-chain switch on a fine cord means you can turn it off without fumbling in the dark — a small but deeply satisfying detail. The fabric shade is gently tapered and cream-coloured, its surface carrying the soft, lived-in quality that only time gives. On its face, an embroidered monogram — *EB* — is worked in a dainty interlocking style, just visible against the pale ground. The shade shows the faint marks of a long and well-used life.
Patricia explains that she loves to make up a story about who the *EB* monogram might have belonged to — and that imaginative generosity is very much in the spirit of Chanteduc, where objects are never merely decorative but carry a life of their own. Hung beside a bed, a reading chair or a writing desk, this sconce would bring the same warmth to a contemporary bedroom or study: adjustable, atmospheric and quietly personal, with a monogram that invites its next owner to invent their own story.
