A vintage ceramic beurrier, or butter bell, from the personal collection at Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter Wells’ home in Provence. In softly glazed cream, the rounded pot shows a pleasing shoulder and tidy collar, topped with a neat lidded cup. Patricia loves butter bells; they’re “very convenient,” she explains, a modest tool that keeps the table welcoming and the cook unhurried. True to her intelligent simplicity, it marries usefulness with grace and reflects a life shaped by markets, gardens and shared tables. Use is simple. Pack softened butter into the cup inside the lid and smooth it level. Fill the base with cold water to create a seal that keeps the pat cool and fresh at room temperature, and refresh the water daily in warm weather. The compact, hand-friendly shape sits comfortably on a breakfast tray or beside the stove, and the calm cream glaze pairs easily with stoneware and white linens. Set it out with sea salt and a crusty loaf for a pre-dinner drink, or display it on open shelving among everyday ceramics.
