An artisanal French cream-glazed earthenware berry drainer from the kitchen at Chanteduc, Patricia Wells’s Provençal home. Hand formed and finely pierced, the shallow rounded bowl stands on three petite feet that lift it lightly for clean drainage. The glaze is a soft cream with a gentle sheen and tiny freckles from the firing, a quiet record of the kiln and the maker’s hand. From Patricia’s personal collection, this vintage colander was an everyday essential beside the sink for rinsing berries from the marché and herbs from the potager, then carried straight to the table for serving. “I just love them,” she fondly remarks, a reflection of her market-to-table life between Paris and Provence.
Sturdy and serviceable, it shows the light, honest traces of regular use that speak to its métier and impeccable provenance. In your own cuisine, put it to work with strawberries, cherries, or cherry tomatoes, or keep it by the sink piled with fragrant lemons. The raised feet allow air to circulate, making it a handsome catchall for garlic heads and shallots. A practical, companionable piece that embodies Patricia’s intelligent simplicity and generous hospitality, it brings authentic craft and purpose to the daily rhythm of cooking and serving.
