A vintage French petit beurrier (little butter dish) from the kitchen at Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter Wells’s Provençal home. Patricia smiles, “A petit beurrier, very Parisian. Perfect for guests with a dinner roll. You could also use it for sauce or tapenade, any kind of spread.” An internationally respected journalist, restaurant critic, cookbook author, and cooking school founder, Patricia brings authority without pretension to everyday service. This beurrier is featured on p. 230 of Salad as a Meal, by Patricia Wells. In clear molded glass that is bright and pleasantly weighty, the piece features a petite domed cloche with a rounded finial that lifts comfortably in the hand. A shallow well in the saucer keeps butter or condiments neatly in place, while the polished rim and crisp profile give it a refined presence. Scaled for individual service, it sits discreetly beside a plate or on a small tray. Vintage condition is very good, with light surface wear consistent with gentle use. Set one at each place for a dinner roll, or gather several on a board for herb butter, tapenade (olive spread), or a quick sauce. It is equally charming for jam at breakfast or a tiny crumble of goat cheese at aperitif (pre-dinner drinks). Another lot of three is available.
