This vintage French two-light wall sconce is designed in the Marie-Thérèse style, named after Maria Theresa of Austria (1717–1780), Queen of Hungary and Bohemia. The style emerged from the 18th-century Bohemian and Viennese tradition of embellishing metal lighting frames with molded glass and faceted pendants. The effect is light and airy, with a delicate sparkle. Here, two graceful arms curve outward from a shaped backplate, meeting a tall central glass element embellished with small floral rosettes. Further glass flowers punctuate the arms, while a series of shaped pendants hangs below, adding just enough ornament. The two lights are finished with custom-made pale fabric shades, whose simple tapered form softens the sparkle of the glass and gives the sconce a more contemporary balance.
