This piece is a vintage kanti, the distinctive closed-top water pitcher of Southwestern France and Provence. Unlike most open-mouthed jugs, the kanti is sealed at the top, with a loop handle arching over a globular body and two opposing spouts: one conical for filling and the other narrow for drinking. This example, likely mid-20th century from Cliousclat, reproduces the popular late 19th-century form in hand-thrown earthenware with a glossy marbled glaze of ochre, green, and chestnut over a buff ground.
Once a familiar household vessel for cooling and serving water, the  kanti has become a symbol of rural tradition in the South of France. Today, it makes a warm and sculptural accent in the home, its bold glaze and compact form adding color and character on open kitchen shelving, a sunroom console, or a dining table vignette.
