Vintage Terracotta Classical Female Bust on Plinth

For years, this small terracotta bust has occupied a niche in the courtyard wall at Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter Wells's farmhouse in Vaison-la-Romaine — a fitting address for a copy of a figure drawn from the Roman ruins that surround this corner of Provence. Vaison itself was one of the most important Roman cities in Gaul, and its ancient theatre, colonnades and carved stonework remain very much part of daily life there. Modelled in warm, sandy terracotta, the figure depicts a classical female head with softly moulded features — calm eyes, a straight nose, gently closed lips — and elaborately dressed hair swept up and pinned, rendered in rippling, textured detail. She sits on a stepped square plinth, the whole piece compact enough to hold in two hands. This one would be equally at home on a garden wall, a stone windowsill, a library shelf or tucked into an alcove indoors — anywhere that benefits from a little classical composure and the suggestion of a longer history than your own.
