"I collected boxes, and this is a beautiful box," Walter says of this small wooden case from their Paris apartment, believed to have once housed a scientific instrument. Whether it once held a compass, a set of drawing instruments, a small telescope or some other tool of measurement or observation, the box carries the purposeful integrity of the scientific and artisan trades that flourished in Paris for centuries. Today it would sit beautifully on a desk or shelf, holding correspondence, small tools, jewelry or anything else that deserves a considered home.
