A large anthropomorphic teapot in glazed stoneware, at once whimsical and commanding. The slab-built square body carries a soft buff glaze, its sides patterned with delicate white floral relief. A stylized female figure enlivens the form: a bust to the front, one arm looped into a handle, the other raised as a spout. The removable lid is modeled as a sculpted head, serving as both stopper and focal point. Stamped JDA to the underside for Julie Desert Armanville, the surface bears the subtle irregularities of studio firing, lending warmth and individuality.
Rooted in the Vallauris tradition of witty, sculptural utility, the piece merges vessel and figure in a playful yet balanced silhouette. Armanville, who worked in Roger Capron’s atelier between 1972 and 1982, is known for her expressive modeling and tactile surfaces, qualities evident here in the floral slip texture and robust grès body.
Though functional, its weight and sculptural presence make it better suited as a decorative accent. Placed on a kitchen dresser, dining console, or open shelving, it becomes a focal point, its expressive head-lid, witty arm-spout, and patterned relief catching light and shadow with striking effect.
Light wear.
