Whimsical Black Forest Hand-Carved Bear Bottle Holder, c. 1900 - 14½"x 11½"

A charming Black Forest bottle holder, hand-carved in linden wood and dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, likely from Brienz, Switzerland, the renowned centre of the Black Forest carving tradition. The figure playfully depicts a standing bear as an Alpine hiker, its mouth wide open in a spirited roar as it grasps a pair of alpenstocks and carries a traditional woven backpack basket across its shoulders, combining skilled craftsmanship with a whimsical sense of humour. Beside the bear stands a coopered barrel, hollowed to receive a wine bottle, all mounted on a rectangular wooden plinth. The rich chocolate-brown finish accentuates the finely carved texture of the fur, basket, and barrel. Presented in good vintage condition, with a stable age-related crack to the barrel, gentle wear from years of handling, and minor rubbing and scratches to the plinth, all consistent with its age and use. 

Black Forest carvings such as this flourished from the late 19th century into the early 20th century, particularly around Brienz in Switzerland and the German Black Forest. Bears, long associated with Alpine folklore and mountain life, were among the most popular subjects, alongside other woodland animals. Combining remarkably naturalistic carving with a playful sense of humour, these sculptural objects remain among the most enduring and sought-after creations of the Black Forest tradition.
