This figural ceramic pitcher form the mid-20th century takes the whimsical form of a singing frog cradling a small guitar, poised upon a sculpted lily pad. With one knee bent to the ground in the posture of serenading, the frog tilts back its head, its wide-open mouth serving as the spout. A curling water-lily stem, ending in a soft pink-tinted bloom, forms the handle. Finished with glossy polychrome glazes in shades of ivory, deep green, warm ochre, and rose, the piece is signed on the underside and remains in very good condition, with overall pretty crackle to the glaze and gentle wear on the raised points, but no visible chips.
Charming as a sculptural accent in a garden room, breakfast nook, or cottage kitchen, this pitcher can be displayed alone or grouped with other majolica for a vibrant vignette. Its serenading pose, with knee bent and guitar in hand, lends the piece a theatrical, lighthearted air that enlivens any setting.
It may be used as a whimsical pitcher for chilled beverages or as an impromptu vase filled with fresh blooms. On a console or open shelf, the lively silhouette and gently crackled patina bring grace, humor, and character to any interior
