This late 19th-century pocket watch stand in the form of a monkey is cast in silvered metal and full of character. The figure sits alert on a molded rectangular plinth, one arm raised to suspend a watch, its crisply modeled fur and expressive features lending both wit and naturalism. The silvering shows gentle rubbing at the high points, with scattered surface marks and scuffs along the base, all of which enhance its timeworn charm, while a stable crack at the rear does not affect the structure.
Designed as both a decorative accent and a practical accessory, it provided a place to display and keep a gentleman’s pocket watch readily visible on a desk, mantel, or bedside table. It is accompanied by a pocket watch for display, which could easily be replaced with a working example to serve as a clock on a mantel or bedside table. On a nightstand or desk, it serves as a whimsical sculptural accent and a charming timekeeper when paired with a running pocket watch. Solid and satisfyingly weighty in the hand, it also lends itself to use as a decorative bookend or paperweight.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
