A small military portrait signed Horace Vernet (1789-1863). Signature is near the subject's right hand.

Emile-Jean-Horace Vernet (known as Horace Vernet) was the grandson of Claude-Joseph Vernet. He studied under his father Carle, also a painter. Horace Vernet was a nineteenth-century painter well known for his battle scenes. Remarkably, he was born in the Louvre during the French revolution where his parents were seeking shelter. He enjoyed the patronage of the duc d'Orléans, later King Louis-Philippe, and Napolean III, for whom he painted portraits and several battle scenes. Another important commission was the Constantine Room at the Palace of Versailles, for which he painted all of the portraits. A number of his paintings are in the collection of The National Gallery, London.
This painting is on consignment and a certificate of authenticity is included.
