1960s French Painted Concrete Stork Garden Ornament - 19¾"

A vintage French garden stork, likely dating from the 1960s, cast in concrete and retaining much of its original hand-painted finish. The bird has an upright, almost inquisitive pose, with its vivid yellow eyes that gives it an alert expression. Loosely painted black feathers contrast with the off-white body, while the red beak and slender legs add strong graphic accents. The paint shows scattered wear and weathering consistent with age and outdoor exposure, and the tip of the beak is broken, a visible but relatively discreet loss. The slender iron legs are later replacements, as is the rustic wood base. 

Concrete animal figures were familiar features of mid-20th-century French gardens, bringing color and personality to terraces and planted areas. Traditionally associated with good fortune, prosperity, and new life, the stork has particular resonance in Alsace, where it remains an enduring regional emblem. 

This example could be displayed on a sheltered terrace or brought indoors, where its weathered paint and slightly naïve modeling evoke the whimsical character of mid-century French garden decoration. It would pair naturally with the similar stork available separately.
