French Decorative Géry Slipware Plate w/ "Japonisme" Crane and Floral Decoration, 1920–1950 - 8¾"

This decorative ceramic plate was made by the Géry pottery at Saint-Laurent-du-Pape in Ardèche, likely between the 1920s and 1950s, and bears the Géry mark on the reverse. Against a warm terracotta ground, a tall stylized crane is painted by hand among flowering branches, its cream plumage and elongated silhouette standing out clearly against the richer surrounding colors. The decoration is worked with lightly raised and incised details, while a dense floral border in cream, blue-green and olive frames the composition. A few very small chips are visible, consistent with age, and the plate retains its metal hanging system on the reverse.

This Japonisme-inspired subject is rather uncommon in Géry production, departing from the rural French scenes, country life and local nature more typically associated with the workshop’s slipware. The crane and flowering branches give the plate a more lyrical quality, while the strong outlines and stylized forms remain entirely in keeping with the workshop’s decorative language.

Designed for display, it would bring a delicate, poetic note to a kitchen or dining-room wall, whether hung on its own or paired with other Géry plates from the same period.
