Hand-Painted French Decorative Plate by Robert Géry w/ Swans, 1920–1950 - 8¾"

This decorative ceramic plate was made by Robert Géry at Saint-Laurent-du-Pape in Ardèche between the 1920s and 1950s. It bears the R. Géry stamp on the reverse, with Saint-Laurent-du-Pape incised into the clay. The central scene depicts three swans gliding across blue-green water bordered by tall reeds, all freely hand-painted with lightly raised and incised details that give the surface texture and depth. A generous floral border in cream, blue-green and olive surrounds the scene, standing out against the warm terracotta ground and giving the composition a rich, cheerful character. A few very small chips are visible, consistent with age, and the plate retains its metal hanging system on the reverse.

The rural, nature-inspired subject is characteristic of Géry slipware, whose best-known decorative themes celebrate French country life with nature, tradition and everyday rural scenes at their heart. Here, the swans and reeds give the composition a gentler, more lyrical quality, while the rich floral border and strong palette keep it lively and graphic. Designed to be displayed, it would bring warmth and color to a kitchen or dining-room wall, whether hung on its own or paired with other Géry plates from the same period.
