French Decorative Plate by Robert Géry w/ Art Deco Floral & Geometric Decoration, 1920–1950 - 8¾"

This small decorative earthenware plate was made by Robert Géry at Saint-Laurent-du-Pape in Ardèche, probably between the 1920s and 1950s, a dating supported by the R. Géry stamp on the reverse. Its decoration is notably different from the rustic narrative scenes more often associated with the Géry pottery: two large stylized flowers unfold across a warm terracotta ground, surrounded by an incised geometric pattern picked out in blue-green, olive, cream and dark brown. The combination of simplified floral forms, strong outlines and angular geometry gives the plate a distinctly graphic quality, very much in keeping with the Art Deco sensibility of the period. A small chip is visible on the rim and another within the decoration, both discreet and consistent with age.

This more abstract, design-led decoration makes the plate an especially interesting example of Géry production, moving beyond the workshop’s better-known traditional country imagery while retaining its characteristic hand-worked earthenware technique. It retains a metal spring hanging system at the back and can be displayed easily on a wall.
