This large ceramic vase was made at the Keraluc pottery in Quimper (Brittany) in the 1960s and hand-painted by André Horellou (1943-1999), whose signature appears underneath. Its generous, rounded body has the shape of a traditional pitcher, with a beautifully curved handle and a long, narrow spout, rising from a flared pedestal foot to a wide, gently flaring neck. The surface is covered with an elaborate composition of geometric patterns, curling floral motifs and delicate linear details in muted olive green, cream and black. The decoration extends across the handle and spout, with small irregularities in the hand-painted finish and light traces of age adding to its character.
Founded in 1946, Keraluc became known for its artist-led approach, combining Breton pottery traditions with a more modern, graphic sensibility. This piece beautifully captures that spirit, with its playful mix of structured patterns and free-flowing ornament. A beautiful collectible piece, it has a strong visual presence that deserves to be appreciated as a work of art in its own right .It would look lovely on a dining room sideboard, a large open shelf or a console, displayed on its own or as part of a carefully curated collection of ceramics.
Note: Another Keraluc vase of the same form, hand-painted by Paul Yvain, is available for separate purchase here.
