Mediterranean Coastal Scene, French Oil on Canvas Signed Lumière, Early 20th Century - 19¾" x 25½"

Signed Lumière at the lower right, this early 20th-century oil on canvas depicts a lively Mediterranean coastal scene, with traditional fishing boats drawn up along a sandy shore. A whitewashed house, fishermen and fishing gear animate the foreground, while small sailing boats punctuate the blue-green sea beneath an expansive pale sky. The painting is handled with loose, expressive brushwork and touches of stronger color across the boats and figures. It remains in evocative, timeworn condition, with small areas of paint loss and staining, a tear and several small holes; visible repairs to the reverse attest to earlier restoration. 

The composition belongs to a tradition of early 20th-century Mediterranean marine painting that favored everyday coastal life over grand seascapes. Fishing boats, modest waterfront buildings and working figures provided painters with subjects rich in color and atmosphere, while the broad sky and open water allowed particular attention to the changing southern light. The soft blues, sandy neutrals and touches of red and green give the painting a relaxed, sun-washed character, enhanced by its weathered surface and unframed presentation. It would feel particularly at home in a simple, rustic coastal interior or seaside holiday retreat, casually leaned on a shelf or incorporated into a gallery wall.
