This oil on board, is signed "FM" in the bottom left and is attributed to Fritz Mackensen (1866-1953). It depicts a man riding a horse, leaving the horse stables in a chateau.
The label on the back of the painting reads "1939 V La Bournerie, FM". This indicates the year, title, and the artist's initials.
Fritz Mackensen, born on April 8, 1866, in Greene near Kreiensen, Duchy of Brunswick, was a prominent German painter associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting and Art Nouveau. He was a close friend of Otto Modersohn and Hans am Ende and co-founded the renowned artists' colony at Worpswede. Between 1933 and 1935, he served as the head of the Nordische Kunsthochschule in Bremen, which is known today as the University of the Arts Bremen. Mackensen passed away on May 12, 1953, in Bremen and was laid to rest in the Worpswede Cemetery.
