A pair of Art Deco Philips pendant lights from the 1930s, part of the Phililite series, featuring white opaline glass shades suspended from patinated metal galleries and original chains. The bell-shaped shades display a stepped lower register that catches and diffuses the light beautifully, a hallmark of early modern lighting design. The metal elements show a pleasing aged patina, while the opaline glass remains luminous and well preserved. Small air bubbles within the opaline glass testify to its age and mouth-blown manufacture.
Philips, founded in the late 19th century and long active in France, set the benchmark for quality workshop lighting. Opaline glass, prized since the 19th century for its gentle diffusion, offered glare-free illumination ideal for schools and ateliers.
The two pendants are slightly different in height: they can be hung together for a dynamic, rhythmic composition or used separately in different spaces. Both are in very good condition with timeworn patina to the metal and opaline glass free of visible chips or cracks. Recently rewired to modern standards, they are ready to install.
