Set of 8 Early 20th-Century Italian Trompe-l’Oeil Hand-Painted Stone Fruits

This charming set of eight Italian trompe-l’oeil fruits, likely dating from circa 1900–1930, is hand-carved from marble and alabaster and individually painted to imitate peaches, omandarins and figs with remarkable realism. Each piece has been carefully shaped and colored, with subtle variations in tone and texture giving the group a wonderfully lifelike appearance. Their satisfying weight and smooth stone surfaces also make them particularly pleasing to handle, adding to the convincing illusion.  

Carved stone fruit of this kind combined craftsmanship with a playful interest in illusion, while also answering a long-standing taste for abundant fruit displays in well-appointed interiors. Fresh fruit arranged on dining tables and sideboards could signal hospitality, prosperity and refinement, but was naturally perishable. Marble and alabaster versions offered a permanent alternative, preserving the color and abundance of a fruit arrangement throughout the year without the upkeep of the real thing.
