This petite antique French confit pot dates from the late 19th or early 20th century and has a lovely, gently rounded shape, with a slightly tapered base and a broad rolled rim. Its soft green glaze is particularly attractive, varying from pale sage to deeper leafy green, with subtle mottling and a fine network of crazing. The glaze covers the upper part of the pot, ending in an irregular line with a few generous drips running down the natural terracotta below. The exposed clay has developed a warm, earthy patina, contrasting beautifully with the glossy green surface. There are a few small chips and areas of glaze loss, particularly around the rim, consistent with its age and use.
Small enough to fit comfortably in the hand, this little confit pot has all the charm of traditional Provençal farmhouse pottery in miniature. Its soft green color and warm terracotta tones would look lovely on a kitchen shelf, perhaps holding a few sprigs of dried lavender or thyme. Two other small antique confit pots are available separately, each with its own distinctive shape, glaze and patina, here and here. The three would make a beautiful little collection.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
