US$12,345
A striking Dutch Louis XIV painting from the early-seventeenth century titled, Noli me tangere - 'don't touch me' in Latin. Painted in the style of Daniel Seghers.
Flower garlands usually frame a pious image or portrait. This type of composition is popularized within the framework of the Counter-Reformation movement of the Catholic church, in order to distinguish itself from Protestantism which condemned images of divine or holy figures. To own such a painting was therefore to mark adherence to Catholicism and hostility to the Protestant Reformation. The collaboration of two artists was frequent.
Note the detail to the wreath with a butterfly and insects. The wreath includes tulips, roses, figs, a pomegranate pears cherries and grapes. The frame has been replaced with one from the sixteenth century.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.

Approx. overall including frame 39¾" x 35½" x 4¼" deep
