Very Large Mid-Century Adjustable Saucer Planter by Willy Guhl - 47¼"

This very large round fiber-cement planter dates from the mid-20th century and was designed by Swiss designer Willy Guhl for Eternit. Its broad, shallow basin has a softly rounded profile and pronounced rim, raised on a separate flared pedestal that gives the piece a low but commanding presence. The simplicity of the circular form is particularly effective at this scale, creating a strong architectural silhouette without appearing heavy. Its pale surface has weathered beautifully, with warm cream and gray tones, darker deposits around the rim and traces of moss and staining that underline its long life outdoors. The basin is pierced for drainage. 

Guhl’s use of fiber cement allowed him to create garden pieces that were durable and relatively lightweight while retaining a bold, sculptural quality. Here, the wide circular basin lends itself especially well to low, spreading or trailing planting, which can soften the outline while leaving the form clearly visible. Positioned on a terrace, in a courtyard or among other mid-century planters, it has enough scale and individuality to anchor a planting scheme on its own. 

As with many fiber-cement pieces of this period, the material may contain asbestos; we recommend outdoor use and advise against sanding, drilling or otherwise altering the surface.
